Creating Routines for a Successful School Year

CREATING ROUTINES

The transition from summer back to school can be a stressful time. Whether it is their first day of college or the transition from middle school to high school, it can be difficult to go from the freedom of summer into the structure of school.

This transition can feel overwhelming and chaotic for children, which can ultimately affect their academic performance, overall well-being, and functionality.

However, there is a solution to this. Children and teens thrive with structure, so creating a routine, especially before school starts, can minimize the stress they might be experiencing.

Creating a sense of stability through predictable routines will allow your child to focus on school rather than feeling stressed out.

THIS CAN INCLUDE:

●       Consistent bedtimes and wake-up times to improve punctuality and sleep quality

●       Regular family meals when possible to prioritize connection and communication

●       Homework and study routines to stay on top of workloads

●       Time for physical activity to support a healthy body

●       Time to relax and unwind without screens to reset the mind

ROUTINES DON'T HAVE TO BE PERFECT

Routines do not have to be perfect or followed exactly. They are simply meant to provide structure, giving your child the ability to know and expect what comes next.

The goal is not perfection. The goal is to create a sense of stability that makes the transition into a new school year feel a little more manageable.
